North Somerset has a thriving agriculture and food & drink production industry, employing over 15,000 people in the area. There are many local businesses which can be supported through rethinking our shopping habits and focusing on shopping locally and therefore more sustainably. From zero waste stores to local farms to bakers and greengrocers: by planning meals and shopping trips we can eat more locally, without it costing the earth. We don’t have to cut out meat completely to become a more sustainable area, but we do need to reconsider how and where our food is processed and aim to cut down (but not necessarily cut out) our consumption of meat. A move to a ‘flexitarian’ diet would be beneficial for the planet, for our health and for our pockets. Meat and dairy constitute important parts of the diet but in significantly smaller proportions than whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes. Food waste still counts for a high proportion of our waste, there are multiple ways to reduce food waste – did you know that nearly 70% of food waste comes from homes? It’s important that we take personal responsibility for reducing the amount of food we waste.
